Is Intune Worth the Switch for Remote Device Management?

With so many companies shifting to a remote workforce, reliance on traditional VPN-based device management seems to be waning. Managing policies can get tricky when users aren't consistently connected, software deployments often take ages, and troubleshooting remote devices can be a headache. I've heard positive things about Intune's conditional access for cloud management, but I'm curious: has it truly solved these issues for you, or has it simply introduced new challenges? Also, how does the complexity of configuration compare to the old system?

Switching to Intune was a game-changer for us! The VPN situation was a pain since so many users wouldn't bother logging in when everything they needed was web-based. With Intune, we quickly pushed out configurations without worrying about VPN issues. I'm still using a VPN for certain resources, but we're transitioning to SASE. It just made everything smoother.

That sounds like a solid plan! We’re even automating Windows builds with Intune.

Intune is definitely worth it! The Autopilot config makes things a breeze. Just keep in mind that if you have any on-prem resources, you've got to work out how to integrate that access properly. Overall, it’s really effective for what it does, especially for managing devices remotely.

Totally agree! Just be ready for the learning curve, though. It's not as straightforward as GPOs or SCCM.

I have mixed feelings about Microsoft, but honestly, I think Intune can be a big upgrade, especially for remote workforces. Just remember, you can't always do things the same way as you did on-prem. For instance, moving from file servers to SharePoint means restructuring how data is accessed and stored. Also, if you’re maintaining any app servers, make sure to plan for hybrid environments thoughtfully! And be aware that downtime can happen in the cloud, so it’s not a cure-all.

We use a combination of Intune with an always-on VPN setup that has specific exception rules. I think it's crucial to recognize that there isn't one simple solution; a layered approach often works best. Approach it as using different solutions that can complement each other.

If you're already using Microsoft products, I definitely think migrating to Intune is worth it. Just be prepared to spend a lot more time on the transition than you might expect from the vendors. Trust me on that!

Yeah, definitely budget for Intune being pretty slow too.

Exactly! It's not just about the transition; the whole process of uploading and testing apps can be a massive time sink.
