Is it a good idea to switch from a remote service desk job to an onsite sysadmin contract?

I've been working as a remote service desk analyst for two years, mainly overnight, earning $28 an hour with a large company. I technically joined them this past May after being a contractor before, and I can't apply for other internal positions until May of next year. I don't have any certifications or a degree, just experience from service desk roles. I recently applied for a sysadmin position that is onsite with a pay range of $32-$40 an hour, which would require a move, but not too far. After a good chat with the recruiter and their manager, I'm set to talk to the IT manager next Monday.

I'm wondering if this move would be wise. It's a contract-to-hire position lasting 9 months, and I mentioned my desired pay range as $36-$40 an hour. Part of me wishes I'd just asked for $40 given my limited sysadmin experience, but I hope to address that later if things progress. Is this pay range reasonable for a sysadmin, and is it smart to leave a perm job for a contract opportunity as I aim to escape the service desk?

Trading a full-time position for a contract gig is a risk unless you're really confident you can excel in that role. Plus, around $35-$40 is more typical pay for service desk roles in major cities, so just be wary of perspective.

I've noticed that companies can be pretty lowball with service desk roles; I thought $28 was pretty decent for that line of work.

It really depends on your goals. If the sysadmin gig gives you valuable experience that aligns with where you want to go, it might be worth taking the leap, even if you’d be giving up your remote work. Also, moving from night to day shift could benefit you long term.

I hear you on that. My current remote night shift is pretty chill, starting at 3 AM and not much happening until later!

I wouldn't give up a remote job for an office position unless the pay jump is substantial, like $15 or more. Moving and starting a contract role can come with a lot of uncertainties.

Totally get that! But if going from support to an FTE sysadmin role, the learning and experience could be worth it, especially being onsite rather than remote.

Jumping from support to sysadmin definitely has its perks!

$40 on a contract? Are you currently W2? Because you might end up making less with those deductions. A lot of companies are thrilled to bring someone on at that rate if they have any decent skills.

I might've misspoke—this is through a staffing agency, so I think I'd be W2 with them and also at the company once I transition. My current job is W2 too.
