I recently got myself an HP Victus 15 2050 with RTX graphics for about $1200, but I've found it underwhelming for gaming. I'm considering selling it and using that money to build a custom PC with the same budget. My goal is to run games like The Finals and Fortnite, among other demanding titles. I'm totally new to this whole PC building thing and struggle to understand the components and how they work. I'd really appreciate any guidance, and please be kind! Just to clarify, my budget is $1200 NZD.

For a strong budget build, I recommend you consider parts like an AMD GPU since they are usually cheaper than Intel and NVIDIA. Here’s a rough idea:
- Power Supply: 650W, 80+ Gold
- SSD: 1 TB NVMe PCIe 4.0
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB (or Intel Arc A770, but I've heard the drivers are hit or miss)
- RAM: 16 GB DDR5 (6000-7200 MHz)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600
This setup should give you a great gaming experience, especially for the games you mentioned!
With $1200 NZD, you'll be able to put together a solid gaming PC and probably even snag a monitor that kicks your Victus to the curb.
It sounds like you might have overpaid for the HP Victus. If you sell it, you could probably get around half of what you paid, but building a solid gaming PC for $1200 is definitely doable!
Yeah, I think it was an impulse buy—my girlfriend wanted something for Sims 4, and now I see how much I need something better. Can you help me understand how to start building it? It’s all a bit overwhelming.
If you can still return the HP Victus, I would recommend doing that. If not, don’t worry too much; you can build a great setup for $1200 NZD that will outperform what you have now.
I think it's too late for returns now.
Just to clarify, that's NZD, not USD.
