Is it better to buy Windows Server Essentials or stick with Zentyal?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of setting up Active Directory for my workplace and I'm a bit torn. We had purchased a Windows Server Essentials 2025 key, but it turned out to be a nightmare—the key didn't work, and the ISO gave me an error at the 50% mark, even though I had no issues installing Windows Server Standard. So, we returned it.

In the meantime, I've set up Zentyal, which is functioning okay, but I'm running into some challenges. For one, I need to configure Group Policy Objects (GPOs) from a Windows machine since Zentyal doesn't directly support it. It's not causing me too many issues at the moment, but I know using a non-Microsoft product can lead to unexpected headaches later on. Plus, I can't automate application installations through GPOs and there are other limitations with Zentyal.

Given this situation, would you recommend going for a Windows Server Essentials key from reliable sellers, or should I stick it out with Zentyal? Are there any notable limitations I should be aware of if I continue using Zentyal? Also, if you have any suggestions for reputable sellers in Europe for the Windows Server Essentials key, that would be super helpful. Thanks a bunch!

Just a heads-up, Windows Server Essentials is limited to OEM licenses only, so keep that in mind when searching for keys. If you’re not super experienced with Linux and your setup is small, Zentyal might not be the easiest route in the long run. It really depends on what you're hoping to achieve with your Active Directory setup and size of your team. How many users do you have? That could really affect your choice.

If you’re set on using Essentials, that would definitely provide your directory services and folder redirection, which is key for your users. But if Zentyal meets your current needs, it might be worth sticking with it for now, at least until you're totally sure about moving to Essentials. Remember, Zentyal can be a little tricky since it’s non-standard.

Honestly, if you've been struggling with installing the ISO, I might've tried to get a different ISO file instead of returning the product. With only 15 employees, if you’re leaning towards more cloud-based solutions, consider using Office 365 Business Premium for your users. That way you could access Intune and even software management through tools like Action1.
