Is it better to stick with 4x8GB RAM or switch to 2x16GB for my PC?

I have a setup with an i5-10400F CPU, an RTX 3060 12GB GPU, and a B560 motherboard, currently running 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM. I'm looking to upgrade to 32GB for gaming and occasional streaming or multitasking, but I'm unsure whether to add 2 more 8GB sticks (making it 4x8GB) or sell my current RAM to buy a 2x16GB kit instead. I'm concerned about system stability and cost-effectiveness. Is there any significant difference between using 4x8GB and 2x16GB in my system?

If you can find the same model and timings for your current 8GB sticks, adding another pair could be a cost-effective option. But selling them for a fresh 2x16GB might save you hassle in the long run. Depends on if you're willing to deal with the selling process.

It's kind of a pain to sell used RAM, though. But I found selling my set allowed me to upgrade to 2x16GB without spending too much more in total.

Honestly, you should sell. I sold my 2x8GB and upgraded to 2x16GB, and it was worth it for the stability and peace of mind. Plus, there’s always the chance to expand more in the future!

I really think 2x16GB is going to serve you better long-term. Eventually, 32GB will probably become the standard for gaming. Just be cautious about mixing RAM brands or speeds, because that can lead to complications.

Going with 2x16GB is a solid choice because it ensures you're in dual channel mode, and it’s generally more stable. Plus, you can upgrade even further down the line if you need more RAM later. It should easily handle gaming and multitasking without issues. Just make sure you're getting good quality RAM and you should be set!

But remember, even with 4 sticks of 8GB, you still get dual channel capability. I think it can work fine as long as you use identical RAM sticks.

For stability's sake, I'd lean towards 2x16GB. But if you're on a tight budget, and can get more 8GB sticks of the same kind, just go for it. It might save you a bit of cash!
