I'm trying to upgrade my PC without spending more than necessary. My current system has a Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3060 12GB, 16GB of DDR4, and a Gigabyte B450M DS3H motherboard. I plan to keep the RTX 3060 for the foreseeable future because replacing it with a card offering similar or greater VRAM would exceed my budget.
My cheaper option is to update the motherboard BIOS, install a Ryzen 7 5700X or 5700X3D, and upgrade to 32GB of DDR4. The more expensive option is switching to AM5 with a B650 motherboard, a Ryzen 7000-series processor, and 32GB of DDR5. AM5 would cost roughly two to three times as much. With the RTX 3060 staying in the system, would the performance and upgrade potential of AM5 and DDR5 justify that price difference, or should I maximize my current AM4 platform?

The biggest question is whether you are actually running into CPU limits now. If your games are already GPU-limited at your target resolution and settings, a CPU upgrade may not raise average FPS much. Check CPU and GPU usage while playing first, but if you are seeing CPU saturation or poor frame times, the AM4 upgrade is the sensible choice.
Since the RTX 3060 is staying, I’d choose the AM4 upgrade. You’re more likely to be CPU-limited than held back by DDR4, and moving from 16GB to 32GB should help with stuttering and newer games. A 5700X3D-class chip can provide a substantial gaming boost without requiring a new motherboard and memory kit. You can put the money you save toward a future GPU upgrade.
AM5 is the better platform if you can comfortably afford it, mainly because it gives you a longer upgrade path. You could start with a Ryzen 5 and later move to a faster Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 without replacing the board and RAM. However, that advantage does not make the extra cost worthwhile for everyone, especially when the RTX 3060 will remain the main graphics limitation.
I’d only move to AM5 if you need a new platform for reasons beyond gaming performance or you can find a genuinely good bundle deal. Otherwise, upgrading the existing AM4 system is a practical way to get several more years from it. The downside is that AM4 has little upgrade room afterward, but that is easier to accept when the immediate savings are this large.
For a budget-focused gaming upgrade, a good AM4 X3D processor and 32GB of DDR4 make the most sense. The difference between DDR4 and DDR5 is usually much less important than the CPU and GPU in this situation. Just confirm that your B450 board supports the selected processor, update the BIOS before removing the Ryzen 5 3600, and check that your cooler is adequate.
The main reason I’m keeping the graphics card is its 12GB of VRAM. Replacing it with something offering similar or more memory would blow through my budget, and I’m mainly looking to address the Ryzen 5 3600 being the weaker part of the system.
