As a college student majoring in Computer Science and approaching my senior year, I'm eager to get into the IT field. I know that starting at a helpdesk is often recommended as a way to gain experience, but given the high cost of living in my area and the relatively low salary typically associated with helpdesk roles, I'm wondering if it's really necessary. Is it realistic for someone like me, with certifications and projects to showcase my skills, to move directly into a sysadmin role after graduation? I'm considering starting my RHCSA certification and would love any advice about breaking into the IT market right now.

In this job market, it's tough to land a sysadmin position right away without experience. While it's not impossible, it’s quite unlikely. Most employers prefer candidates who have put time in at helpdesk or a similar role because they want to see real-world experience and practical skills.
Exactly! If you can find a company that’s just big enough for in-house IT, you might end up doing a lot of work while still starting lower on the pay scale. It won’t hurt to apply everywhere, though; you never know what might come up!
