Is it okay to use a temporary drive for my new PC build?

I have all the components ready to build my new PC, except for the storage, which is a 1TB SSD that's not shipping until the new year. I'm thinking about picking up a cheaper 256GB storage drive to get started. Are there any downsides to this? Specifically, I'm concerned about having the operating system on a different drive. Will it cause any issues, or will I be able to transition to the new SSD later without needing to start over from scratch?

You can always clone your OS to the new drive once it arrives. There are plenty of tools available online that can help with the cloning process, and it’s usually pretty straightforward.

Just keep the temporary drive for your OS and avoid installing anything too large on it. Once your bigger SSD arrives, you’ll have plenty of space for games and other files without any hassle.

It's good to remember that putting your OS on a separate drive is common; it was pretty standard back in the day when SSDs were pricier. Just consider a few things: what type of storage are you looking at? If it’s slower than the SSD you’re waiting on, that could impact performance. Also, make sure the smaller drive is a good deal, as prices can vary a lot.

No need to worry too much about cloning. You can just use the 256GB for your OS and keep it clean. When your 1TB SSD arrives, just use it to store bigger applications and games. The speeds of the SSD won’t impact the OS performance drastically, so you should be fine.

Using a temporary drive is totally fine! You'll just have to keep track of where your programs and games install, especially the bigger ones. I started with a 1TB drive and later added a 2TB one without major issues, so don’t worry too much about it. Just plan your installations accordingly.
