Is it really necessary to get a court order to access my deceased uncle’s iPad?

Hey everyone! I need some advice about my late uncle's iPad. He passed away last year and mentioned to my aunty that he would share his passcode with her, but sadly, he never got the chance to do so. Now, I've been trying to help my aunty recover the iPad, but no luck whatsoever. I've tried every method I could think of, like resetting it and even contacting Apple Support. They told me I need a court order to unlock the device, which seems extreme to me. I'm wondering if there's any legitimate way to access the iPad without going through all that hassle. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

If it helps you, try initiating the account recovery via iforgot.apple.com. Wait 24 hours, and it might give you an update on whether you're clear for recovery without needing that email. You could be closer than you think!

Yes, unfortunately, that's the reality with Apple. They take security very seriously, which is why they have legacy contact settings, so you can plan ahead for situations like this. I can totally understand how frustrating this is for you, but there really isn't a shortcut without going through the proper legal channels.

Oh, I see! Thanks for clarifying that. I'll definitely look into setting up legacy contacts for my other family members.

This is more about preventing stolen devices from being accessed by just anyone. If you have legal proof like a death certificate, Apple can help unlock the device. It's just a bit of a hassle to go through the protocol.

Got it, thanks for this. I will make sure to have all the necessary documents when I reach out!

I get how tough this is, and while it may seem like gatekeeping, it's really about protecting user privacy. Apple’s policies are there for security reasons, so just follow their instructions and you'll get there eventually.

Thanks for your understanding! I do see the value in their security, but it’s just a tricky situation.

No Apple Store can bypass this requirement. You really have to go through Apple’s official recovery process. They won’t just unlock it without legal proof of ownership, and that's non-negotiable for them.

I appreciate the info! I wish I had known about this process earlier.
