Hi everyone, I just noticed that my iPhone 13 seems to have a swollen battery after updating to iOS 18. I flew from the UK to Germany recently and after my flight, the screen is bending and lifting out of its frame. I'm flying back tomorrow and I'm really concerned about whether it's safe to take it on the plane. I plan to power it off, not charge it, and handle it carefully, but I've heard that swollen batteries can be dangerous. Should I be worried about this causing problems mid-flight? Or should I try to remove the battery myself before heading home? It's tough to find a repair shop around here in the countryside. Any advice would be appreciated!

This is seriously a dumb move if you’re thinking of taking that phone on the flight. You’re endangering everyone on board. Please don’t bring that risk with you!
If you’re just worried about it getting confiscated, usually swollen batteries aren’t an immediate issue. But honestly, I'd still try to take it out before flying. You can check for tutorials online on how to replace it if you’ve done screen work before! That way it can ride with your checked baggage. I'll also suggest you check this link for guidance: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+13+Battery+Replacement/145896
Amazing, thank you so much! I'll look into that xx
Honestly, I wouldn’t risk flying with that phone. Swollen batteries can catch fire, which is a massive safety hazard. If it were me, I’d recommend removing the battery before the flight if you can. It's really important to avoid taking that on the plane with you. Better safe than sorry!
Noted, thanks - No I wasn't joking, I genuinely didn't know that the risk was that severe. Thanks for letting me know though, I'll find a way to remove the battery before I hop on the plane.
Why are we acting like a swollen phone battery is a level 10 avengers threat…
At least they asked, which shows that they care. Others wouldn't ask and just disregard the risk.
