Is it safe to leave my laptop and external drives in a cold room overnight?

I'm dealing with a really cold computer room during winter nights, where temperatures drop into the 40s or 50s. My place is pretty old and lacks central heating, so I can't leave a space heater running overnight. I use a laptop and a couple of external hard drives daily at my work desk in this room. I know about acclimation with temperature changes, but I'm wondering if it's okay to just leave everything in the cold room 24/7. Should I be moving them out every night, or are they fine staying there?

Honestly, I’d rather have my electronics in a colder environment than a hot one. If your room warms up during the day, that helps too!

I've run my computers in cool garages during the winter with no problems, so I think you’re good to leave your setup in the cold room. They’re designed to operate in a variety of conditions, so don’t stress too much about it!

That’s reassuring! Just wanted to make sure my devices weren’t in danger.

Most electronics handle lower temperatures quite well, especially in the range you're describing. Just make sure to keep an eye on humidity levels—if it swings a lot, condensation could be an issue. But generally, your devices should be fine!

Thanks for the tip! I’ve been using a pile of clothes to cover my laptop just to be safe, but now I'm worried that might cause static.

From what I understand, systems are usually tested for extreme temperatures. It sounds like they should be fine as long as you’re careful about humidity. Just think about how cold it can get in places like Northern Minnesota—yikes!

Yeah, that's a different level of cold! Thanks for the reassurance!
