I'm considering upgrading my CPU from a Ryzen 7 5700X but it's not urgent; it's more like something I plan to do in the next 6-12 months. The Ryzen 7 5700X has served me well, but I'm thinking long-term about moving to the AM5 platform for better longevity and support for new tech like DDR5 and future CPU releases.
I'm open to both new and used options, especially if I can find good deals on bundles. I'm looking for a CPU that's a solid upgrade over the 5700X but also makes sense in terms of cost and performance.
In a year or so, I also plan to upgrade my GPU, likely to an RTX 5070/5070 Ti/5080 or a Radeon 7900 XT/XTX. I'll make sure to get at least an 850W PSU when that happens.
Here's my current setup:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X
- GPU: Radeon RX 6900 XT
- RAM: 32GB DDR4 (2x16GB) 3200MHz
- Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G5 50" (1440p, 180Hz)
- PSU: Seasonic GX-650 (80+ Gold)
- Storage: NVMe SSDs
I'm mainly gaming with modern AAA titles and looking for insights on which CPUs would be a worthwhile jump from the 5700X, especially considering my future GPU upgrade.

You might want to check out the 9800X3D, but be aware it's quite powerful and might be overkill unless you plan on upgrading your GPU to something really high-end soon. For now, if you're not feeling the X3D, a 7800X3D is a great balance between performance and price.
If you're looking to future-proof while still playing at 1440p, I’d recommend the 7800X3D. It’s powerful enough for AAA titles, especially with that display of yours. But if you want to save some cash, the 9600X could also be a decent choice without a huge drop in performance for most games.
Honestly, consider getting a 5800X3D for now. It's a solid upgrade that doesn't require moving to AM5 yet. You don't really need the upgrade to AM5 unless you want future-proofing with DDR5 and more CPU options later. The 5800X3D offers excellent gaming performance without breaking the bank.
You should think about getting a new GPU first – the 5700X is still pretty good for 1440p. The GPU tends to impact performance more in gaming. Once you upgrade that, then you can see if your CPU is still holding you back.
