I found an EVGA 500B power supply that I stashed away years ago, and I'm considering using it for a budget AM4 build. Is it safe to use such an old PSU? Also, will it be compatible with B450 or B550 motherboards?

It should work just fine, but make sure to visually inspect it. Look out for any bulging or leaking capacitors and check the connectors for corrosion before you plug it in.
Well, it really depends on its history. How much was it used? Did it have any issues? If it was only used moderately for a few years without problems, you should be okay. Just read the specs of any components you're planning to use to ensure they don't exceed the PSU's capacity.
The PSU was never used. Is there a way to test it without connecting it to a motherboard?
