Is It Safe to Use Cheap Server OS Keys from Reseller Sites?

Hey everyone! I'm curious if anyone here has ever bought server OS keys and CALs from reseller sites like cjs cdkeys or g2a for use in a production environment. I'm particularly interested in any potential issues or implications this might lead to. I've purchased Server 2022 keys before for my home lab to convert evaluation versions to standard ones, but I'm wondering about risks in a production setting. Any insights?

There’s a fundamental difference between a license and an activation key. If you're caught with these illegitimate keys, you could face fines in a Microsoft audit. They do have legal KMS activation keys you can use if you have the right licensing, but be careful—there are many illegal KMS servers out there. It’s risky to use the shady keys; it's essentially software piracy.

For home labs, if you're not making any profit off Microsoft's software, they usually don't pay attention. It's like back in the day with Adobe—there was more focus on businesses than individuals. However, I wouldn't recommend getting comfortable with that; it's still against the rules.

Most of these cheap keys are illegitimate—either they’re stolen or misused developer keys. If Microsoft audits you, you could not only be found non-compliant but also slapped with hefty fines. It’s best to always go through Microsoft or an authorized partner. There might be some talk about legality in Europe regarding resale, but I’d still tread carefully there.

I've heard similar things! Some keys come from companies liquidating assets, but that seems sketchy too. I guess it's safer to just avoid those sites altogether.

Using cheap keys often results in MAK licenses that are against the licensing agreement. It's a risky move, especially in a production environment. If you get audited, you'd likely face consequences for using those keys.

Honestly, if you ever reveal the source of those keys during an audit, you're probably looking at serious trouble. It’s just not worth the risk in a business setting; stick with official Microsoft licensing.
