Is it smart to buy 16GB RAM now and upgrade later?

I'm considering getting a Corsair 16GB RAM at 5600MHz for my PC build right now because prices seem to be dropping. My plan is to buy another identical stick later since I want to eventually upgrade to 32GB. For the next few months, I'm playing some demanding games, but I don't want to break the bank right now. Will it work out if I buy just one stick for now?

I'd advise against it. Just because the RAM is the same brand and model doesn’t guarantee they'll work well together. That’s why they sell matched pairs—they’re tested to play nicely. It might work, but it’s a gamble. Besides, getting two sticks now means you'll benefit from dual-channel mode, which boosts performance! Consider getting 2 x 8GB and then upgrade to a 32GB kit later.

Exactly! And if you're worried about performance, just keep in mind that XMP profiles can sometimes cause issues. Manual timing adjustments might help mitigate that, though.

Also, don't forget to compare latencies when picking RAM. That's just as important as size and speed!

Honestly, I won't be playing too many demanding games in college, so I've decided to keep it simple for my first year. Just something to think about if your gaming needs change!

I've been in your shoes! Buying one stick is usually fine if it's the same model, but sometimes mixing RAM kits can be tricky. Worst-case, it might just run a bit slower or need some tweaks in the BIOS. Go for that 16GB now; it's a solid budget-friendly move. You won’t notice a major difference in games for a short while.

Definitely a good strategy! Doing it in stages is smart.
