Is it time to upgrade to AM5 for gaming?

I've been running on an Intel i9-12900K and a RTX 5080, and everything's smooth at 1440p. But I've been on the AM4 platform for a long time now, and I'm considering an upgrade. I already have DDR5 RAM and I'm eyeing the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and an X670E motherboard. Do you think this is a good move, especially thinking about the potential release of the AM6 platform in about a year and a half?

Before jumping on the AM5 train, consider this: You're on Intel, so you’re not on AM4 or AM5 at all! If you already have DDR5, then yeah, go ahead and think about switching. But if not, it’s really not a necessity and more about personal desire for something new, which can get pricey.

Exactly! Just because there's something new out doesn't mean you need to rush into it. Look at how well your current setup performs.

Upgrading to AM5 right now might not be worth it. Your i9-12900K is still a solid performer, almost on par with the 5800X3D in gaming. I'd recommend saving your cash and waiting for AM6—your current setup is already high-end and should serve you well for a while!

You really don't need an X670E board unless you have special needs. A B850 board should be plenty for gaming. Don't rush into an upgrade if your setup is already working great!

Honestly, you already have a great CPU with the 12900K, so why switch when your current setup runs fine? It sounds more like a case of wanting something new than needing an upgrade.

Yeah, I get the urge for a change! But sometimes staying put is smarter, especially if everything works well.

If you've already got DDR5 and can sell your current CPU and motherboard for a good price, then it could make sense to upgrade. Just be aware that you're in the middle of a tough time to upgrade due to high RAM prices. If you don’t have DDR5, it might be better to hold off for now until prices drop.
