I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600 with an AM4 motherboard. I'm considering an upgrade but I'm unsure about my options. Can I find a better CPU without having to replace my motherboard, or is it essential to get a new board to see any real performance improvements?

If you're sticking with the AM4 socket, the best upgrade would be to look for a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or a 5800X3D for gaming. They can be tough to find and a bit pricey, but they're worth it if you're serious about gaming performance. Otherwise, you might want to save up for an AM5 setup instead.
Honestly, the Ryzen 5 5600 is one of the best value CPUs from its generation. Upgrading to anything else in the AM4 range likely won't give you a noticeable performance boost unless you go for the X3D models, which are quite costly. So, unless you find an amazing deal on one of those, it’s better to start saving for a complete AM5 build.
Your options are limited if you want to stick with AM4. An 8-core upgrade isn't going to significantly improve gaming performance. I'd recommend looking for an X3D version, as they offer the best performance, but be aware they won’t come cheap! The 5700 non-X is a no-go, though.
