Is it Worth Upgrading My CPU with a New RX 6900 XT?

I just got a used RX 6900 XT for $250 and currently have an AMD Ryzen 5 5600 and an RX 6600 XT. I'm thinking about whether I should make the jump to an R7 5800X3D to better match this new graphics card or if I should just stick with my current setup for a while. I'm gaming at 1080p right now, and I expect to run into some issues performance-wise. Has anyone else had experience with this kind of setup?

The 5800X3D is pretty hard to find and can be expensive these days. You might want to look for a used one if you're set on it. Alternatively, the 5700X3D is almost as good and usually cheaper. Just keep in mind its price is going up too! Also, considering you're at 1080p, what’s your monitor's refresh rate?

I'm using a 1080p monitor at 144hz. I plan to upgrade to 1440p at 144hz soon.

I run the same setup but at 1440p. Upgrading to the 5800X3D would only help with fps lows, but you could also consider getting a 7600 and moving to AM5 instead for a performance boost. Just think about how much value that upgrade is to you!

Honestly, I’ve got a RX 6900 XT paired with a 5700X and it crushes everything without any issues. You might be fine sticking with what you have for now!

If you can sell both your current CPU and GPU to cover the upgrade costs, go for it! Maybe even consider the R9 5950 for a little more performance.

I’ve paired a 5600 with a 6800XT at 1440p ultrawide, and I still saw some CPU bottlenecks in heavy games. At 1080p, it might limit your GPU even more! If you can snag a 5700X3D for around $200, that could be a solid move. Otherwise, I'd suggest considering a higher resolution monitor before swapping CPUs.

Wow, a 6900 XT for $250 is an awesome deal! That's a steal!
