I'm currently using a 4070 and didn't plan on upgrading until the next generation of GPUs. However, I'm about to get a 3440x1440 monitor and I'm unsure if my current setup can handle it. Should I go ahead and upgrade to a 5080 now, or would it be better to wait for the 6080?

I just made the jump from a 3070 to a 5080 for 3440x1400 resolution, and it allows me to hit almost 144fps on most games. Sometimes I need to use frame generation, but the high base framerate minimizes latency, which is great. That said, your 40 series should still be capable of handling a lot of games well. Which titles are you aiming to play on max settings?
Before making the upgrade, it might be a good idea to try your current GPU with the new monitor first and see how it performs. You could be pleasantly surprised!
Upgrading to a 5080 would definitely give you a significant boost for ultrawide 1440p gaming, which is quite demanding, almost like dealing with 4K. However, for the price, you might want to consider a 5070 Ti instead. Make sure to check the benchmarks for the specific games you play since features like DLSS 4.0 can really help if it's supported! Also, I'm curious about your system specs. What CPU are you running?
