Hey everyone! I just scored a 5090 GPU at MSRP and I'm thinking about using it with my existing setup, which includes an older 10600K CPU. My main goal is to game at 4K, aiming for a maximum of 144Hz. I'm trying to figure out how much of a bottleneck my CPU will create in this scenario but can't seem to find reliable information. I can afford to upgrade my CPU, but I'd prefer not to if it isn't absolutely necessary. I'd appreciate any insights or data you can share. Thanks in advance!

Not the end of the world at 4K, but you'll definitely want to upgrade when you can. If you want smoother gameplay, consider looking for a decent i7 to slot in for more performance.
It all boils down to the games you're playing. If you're planning to stick with your setup for a while, even getting the 5090 at MSRP is an upgrade, but think about saving up for that CPU/mobo upgrade in the future.
True! Best to evaluate if your games need more juice before jumping into upgrades.
You can check out bottleneck calculators online, but they're not always accurate. They tend to oversimplify things. It's always best to go by real experiences and benchmarks.
Totally agree! Those calculators don't really reflect real-world performance.
Yeah, they're often misleading. Best to rely on actual data and user experiences.
You'll be okay with a 10600K at 4K gaming. The higher resolution reduces the impact of the CPU, so you might not notice a huge drop in performance. But, keep in mind that those lower percentiles can suffer, leading to some choppy gameplay during intensive moments.
Yeah, I had a similar experience with a 10700K and switching to a 9800X3D made things feel way smoother, even if the average FPS didn't skyrocket.
Good point! Those 1% lows can be pretty rough, even if your average FPS looks fine.
I recommend checking out the TechPowerUp review for more details. It showed about a 10% bottleneck at 4K for average FPS, but check minimums where it could be closer to 15%. At max settings, that might drop you under 60 FPS at times, which isn't great. Consider optimizing your settings if you stick with this setup.
Awesome insight! Definitely beneficial to look at actual benchmarks rather than just theoretical performance.
Exactly! And don’t forget that a modern GPU like the 5090 will really shine better with a proper CPU upgrade.
Good advice! Sometimes it's worth waiting for a full platform upgrade to really maximize performance.
