Hey folks! I'm gearing up to build a new PC primarily for video editing and Unreal Engine development. Here's the setup I'm looking at: Ryzen 9 7950X CPU, RTX 5070 GPU, a B650 motherboard (like the MSI PRO B650-S WIFI), Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 RAM (2x32GB, 6000 MHz CL36), Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 cooler, a Corsair RM850e 850W PSU, and a Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB NVMe drive. But I recently visited a local shop, and they raised some concerns that seem to contradict my research. They warned me about the following:
1. They believe that while my motherboard and PSU should technically suffice, the high TDP of the CPU (170W) could lead to premature failures, suggesting I should upgrade to an X870 motherboard and a 1000W PSU.
2. They claimed that the Ryzen 7950X can't handle 6000MHz RAM effectively, capping at 5200MHz, making lower-speed RAM a better fit.
3. They insisted that the Samsung 990 Pro SSD is far superior, implying I should switch to that regardless of the extra cost.
This would hike the total cost by about €300. Are their warnings valid, or is my current setup likely just fine? Thanks for your input!

Honestly, a lot of what they said is just unnecessary. You can run this system on a solid 550W PSU if need be—850W is already more than you need, and it's great for future upgrades. The 5200MHz RAM they suggest is simply not ideal; 6000MHz is the sweet spot for performance. As for the SSD, while the Pro version is technically better, the EVO will be just fine for your needs unless you have specific requirements.
They seem misinformed. The B650 motherboard can handle your CPU just fine, and the 170W TDP isn’t really an issue. An upgrade to X870 is way overkill unless you're super into overclocking or need advanced features. AMD lists 5200MHz as the fallback spec for RAM, but 6000MHz works great too—definitely stick with that. As for the SSD, if your usage doesn't specifically demand the Pro’s capabilities, save your coin for something better!
Thanks for the clarification! I'll definitely opt for 6000 MHz RAM and consider cheaper storage options.
Totally agree! Your setup looks solid as is. Don't let them upsell you on components you don't need.
