Is My CPU the Bottleneck in My Gaming Setup?

I'm trying to make the most out of my 2020 setup before I decide to upgrade to AM5 or possibly even wait for AM6. I've been out of touch with the latest hardware, and my current build doesn't seem to perform as well as I expected based on the specs. I'm starting to think my CPU might be the issue. Do you think I should upgrade from my Ryzen 7 3700x? I mainly play FPS games at 1440p, but I'm also getting into more AAA single-player titles. Here's what I'm working with:

- CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x
- GPU: NVIDIA 3080
- RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200
- Motherboard: ROG Strix B550-E Gaming

Absolutely, upgrading to a Ryzen 5600x, 5700x, or even 5800xt could give you a nice performance boost.

What specific scenarios make you feel like the Ryzen 7 3700X is holding you back at 1440p? Knowing that might help narrow down whether it's really the CPU that's the issue.

Definitely consider checking your GPU utilization while gaming. If it's consistently high (in the 90% range), then a CPU upgrade won't help much since you'd be bottlenecked by the GPU. But if you're seeing lower usage, then yes, look for a 5700x3D or a 5500x3D if you can find one.

I had a similar setup with a 10700k and a 3080 at 1440p. The 10700k was a bottleneck in CPU-limited situations. You might find that the 5700x will significantly outperform the 3700x, especially in fast-paced games. But also, make sure that XMP is enabled for your RAM!

If you can't get an X3D variant easily, jumping to a 5700x is a great choice. It's nearly as powerful as the 5800x but runs cooler.
