Hey everyone! I'm a recent computer science graduate, and I finally have the funds to build my own PC. My background is mainly in software, so I'm new to the hardware part of things. I've put together a list of components for my build and would love some feedback on whether I'm likely to run into any bottlenecks, where I could save some money, and if these parts will meet my needs. My budget is $2,000, and I'm currently sitting right around that number. I plan to use this PC for both gaming and various programming tasks.
Here's what I've chosen:
- **CPU**: Ryzen 5 9600 X - $174. I'm looking for a strong processor since I work with computationally heavy tasks and need to run multiple things at once. I plan to overclock it, though I've heard mixed advice about how much overclocking is safe.
- **Motherboard**: ASRock B650 PRO RS - $150. I read that motherboards aren't the most critical component for performance, so I tried to save on this. I only need Ethernet; I'm not interested in Wi-Fi capabilities.
- **GPU**: RTX 4090 (Used) - $650. I prefer Nvidia for CUDA support, as I want to explore GPU programming and training machine learning models. Still, I'm nervous about buying used since it can be tough to verify the product's condition.
- **RAM**: Corsair Vengeance RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 - $95. I think this will be sufficient for my multitasking needs, considering I might run multiple development environments and have a bunch of tabs open at once.
- **SSD**: WD_Black 4TB M.2 and WD_Black 2TB M.2 - $290 + $200. I want to dual boot Windows for gaming and Arch Linux for productivity. I'm concerned about whether I should stick with both SSDs or just use one larger SSD for everything.
- **PSU**: Corsair RM850 - $154. Heard it's important not to skimp on the power supply, so I went with this one. However, it's pretty pricey.
- **CPU Fan**: Noctua NH-U12a - $130. I've read it's effective and quiet, but I worry about its ability to cool my CPU during overclocking.
- **Case**: Montech XR - $70. I'm not overly picky about looks, but I want something decent enough that doesn't feel cheap.
Total cost is around $1,913. I'd really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on this build and what I might change to save some costs without sacrificing too much performance!
