Is My Hard Drive Failing?

I've got a Seagate 2TB 7200rpm Barracuda hard drive that's over 6 years old, and lately it's been making a ticking noise. I haven't noticed any crashes, no SMART errors, and self-tests pass just fine, but I'm worried. Is that ticking sound a sign that it's on its way out?

Yeah, that ticking noise isn't a good sign. I'd recommend backing up your files as soon as possible, just to be safe. I'd guess you might have a few weeks left before it really starts to give you trouble.

Honestly, assume it's going to fail at any moment. If you've got your data backed up, I'd just let it go and replace it. Sounds like it might be a good time to upgrade to a larger drive anyway.
