Is My i7 13700K Overheating Due to Cooler Issues?

Hey everyone, I've been having some issues with my i7 13700K lately. It started a couple of months ago when my demanding games began to crash frequently. Initially, I thought it was an Nvidia problem, but after checking my CPU temperatures, I suspect overheating might be the culprit. During gameplay, I've noticed the temperature creeping up to around 100°C, which seems high. Intel states that the maximum temperature is indeed 100°C, and I think that could have caused some blue screen errors I experienced. Is this level of heating normal for this CPU? What solutions do you suggest? I'm using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO V2, which I feel should be decent. I've read about reducing the CPU power as a way to manage heat, but I'm worried about losing performance. Any thoughts? Thanks a lot!

You've got to upgrade your cooler for sure. The Hyper 212 just won’t cut it for the 13700K. Look for something like a 280mm or even a 360mm all-in-one cooler, or a solid dual tower air cooler. That’ll help keep those temps down for sure.

Thanks for the advice! Is there a way to check if a cooler is compatible with a specific CPU before I buy it?

Honestly, the Hyper 212 EVO V2 is a bit underpowered for an i7 13700K. That CPU can pull up to 250W under load while your cooler is more suited for something like an i5 12400. Consider getting a beefier cooler, like a dual tower or at least a good AIO cooler. You can also try undervolting or limiting the power package to manage the heat better without impacting performance too much.

I had no idea my cooler was that underwhelming! Do you have any specific cooler recommendations?

First things first, have you checked if your BIOS is updated? Sometimes, outdated BIOS can mess with CPU performance and temperatures. Just a thought!

I haven’t updated it yet. Do you think that could be why I’m having these issues?
