Is My i9-14900k Broken After Thermal Paste Replacement?

I need some help determining whether I may have damaged my i9-14900k CPU after replacing the thermal paste. My setup includes an i9-14900k CPU, a Lian Li GA II Trinity 360MM AIO cooler, and a Z690 AORUS ELITE AX motherboard, among other components. Over the summer, I upgraded to this CPU from an i5-12600k, and everything was fantastic until I decided to clean my PC and change the thermal paste from the stock to ARCTIC MX-7. After reinstalling everything, my idle temperatures jumped from around 35C to about 50C. I tried tightening the cooler, with little effect. Even after switching to a different paste (Corsair XTM70), my temperatures remained high and my CPU started thermal throttling during gaming, reaching 100C. I reset my BIOS settings, ensured my cooler's pump is functioning correctly, and even attempted undervolting, but nothing has improved. My Cinebench score dropped from 40,000 to 33,000, and I'm noticing frame dips in games. I'm at a loss for what's wrong and whether I need to contact Intel for a replacement. Any ideas?

Before jumping to conclusions about needing a new CPU, ensure all settings in your BIOS are correct. If your BIOS wasn't updated properly before installing the i9-14900k, it may affect performance. Also, running a memory test showed your RAM is fine, but keep your BIOS settings in check. Sometimes, a misconfiguration can lead to overheating or throttling.

I did update my BIOS to the latest version pre-install, so I think that part is good. Just frustrating to see my performance tank like this!

There are many potential reasons your CPU performance dropped after changing the thermal paste. First, consider how you applied the paste. Just a dot in the center might not cover the whole surface, especially on LGA 1700 chips. The "X" method or spreading it manually can work better. Also, ensure the cooler is seated evenly without air bubbles. If you're still having issues, reaching out to Intel for a replacement might be worth it since degraded performance could just be a flaw in the CPU.

Yeah, I hear you. I followed the right method too, and my cooler was firm on the CPU. I just can't shake the feeling that something went wrong during my paste application or installation.

It sounds like you might've changed more than just the thermal paste. When swapping thermal compounds, make sure the CPU is clean, and there aren't remnants of the old paste. Since you've already tried different pastes with no results, it may just be time to contact Intel, especially if nothing else improves your performance or cooling.

I actually spoke with Intel before but canceled my request. Now I'm leaning towards contacting them again because it seems the issues are specific to heating and performance.
