Is My New External SSD’s Health Dropping Too Fast?

I recently purchased a Kioxia Exceria Plus G2 2TB portable external SSD mainly for storing various files like photos, videos, documents, and backups. However, I noticed that after transferring about 1TB of data, its health status dropped from 99% to 97%. It started off at 99% when I first booted it up, and I formatted it using exFAT with a 64K unit size. I'm quite worried about this health drop. If I intend to use the SSD frequently, can I rely on it, or should I think about returning it and looking for a different one?

Honestly, your concern is valid. Getting a budget SSD often comes with risks, and the quick decline in health can be alarming. However, Kioxia is generally regarded as a reliable brand since they’re a major player in NAND flash production. Just keep monitoring the health, and if it continues to drop rapidly, don’t hesitate to return it for a better option.

I have a 1TB external SSD that has seen about 17TB written to it and it's only down 2%, so it does seem odd that yours dropped so quickly. There might be an issue with your specific drive. You could keep an eye on it for a while longer to see if it continues to drop, but if it keeps dropping at this rate, definitely consider getting a replacement.

Just a heads up, Kioxia is a well-known company that's part of Toshiba, so it's not all bad just because it's made in China. That said, if you're feeling iffy about it, trust your instincts. If it continues to degrade at this pace, definitely think about getting something else.
