Is My Power Setup Safe for an RTX 4090?

Hey folks! I'm in the process of upgrading to an RTX 4090 (specifically the Ventus 3X model) and I want to make sure my PSU cable configuration is safe. Currently, I have:
- 2 PCIe 6-pin cables
- 1 PCIe 8-pin (6+2) cable
- Plus the 75W that comes from the PCIe slot on the motherboard.

If I break it down, that's about 225W from the two 6-pin cables, 150W from the 8-pin cable, and 75W from the PCIe slot, adding up to a total of 450W, which matches the RTX 4090's TDP.

I'm wondering, is this setup electrically safe and stable if I use it with the 12VHPWR adapter? Or do I strictly need three full 8-pin (6+2) cables? I'd really appreciate any insights from those with experience running a 4090 under similar circumstances. Thanks in advance!

I’m not an expert, but from what I understand, the RTX 4090 typically pulls power primarily through the 12VHPWR connector. If your PSU doesn't support that or is out of spec without three 8-pin connectors, you might run into trouble. It's probably better to find a PSU or adapter that can deliver proper power to avoid risks.

Yeah, I wouldn’t take that risk! If you end up trying it, just make sure to keep an eye on your temps and stability.

Honestly, it doesn’t sound safe. Your total power delivery falls short of what the GPU can draw, especially under load. I’d recommend upgrading to a PSU that has a proper 12VHPWR output or at least use cables that can safely match the power demand, like a 4x8-pin adapter!

Exactly! The risk of damaging your components isn’t worth it.

You really should grab a direct PSU-to-12VHPWR cable from a reputable brand. That way, you’ll ensure you have a stable and safe connection. Don’t take chances with power; it's better to be safe than sorry!

Plus, it’s usually not too hard to get a suitable cable from your PSU manufacturer.
