Hey everyone! I need some help with my current PC setup and I'm wondering about the best upgrade path. Here's what I've got:
- Ryzen 5 5500
- 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz
- ASRock A520M-HDV
- RX 7800 XT 16 GB (recently upgraded)
- XPG Adata Pylon 750W Bronze PSU
- 500 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD
- 1080p 60Hz monitor (planning for a 1440p upgrade soon)
I've been testing out games like *Star Wars Jedi Survivor* and *Oblivion Remastered*, and I've noticed:
- My RAM usage peaks at 13-15 GB with nothing else running.
- In *Oblivion Remastered*, my CPU frequently hits 100% usage, causing some significant lag.
- While my GPU seems to be functioning well overall, I suspect it's not being fully utilized.
I think I might be hitting both a RAM and CPU bottleneck. Should I upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5700X3D and stick with my current AM4 setup to save some cash? Or should I invest in an AM5 platform with a Ryzen 5 7600 or 7800X3D, including new RAM and motherboard? I know AM5 is more future-proof, but it's also pricier, and I already have a solid GPU. Also, since I'm moving to a 1440p monitor soon, that adds to the budget. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Considering your RAM usage is hitting 15GB, it's likely that upgrading your RAM should be a priority. More RAM lets your CPU manage data better without constantly swapping, which should help with performance.
If you're mostly gaming with a heavy focus on GPUs, I'd say go for the 5700X3D and ride it out for a few more years. But if you prefer competitive games and want to ensure top performance, upgrading to AM5 for a more modern CPU is the way to go. Just keep in mind that not all games leverage the L3 cache the same way, so do your research!
Honestly, that CPU isn't doing you any favors. At this point, you’ve got a few options: either go for the 5700X3D for a simpler and cheaper upgrade, or switch to AM5 for a more future-proof solution. Just keep in mind that you might find better performance options with other CPUs as well.
The 5700X3D is a powerhouse and would pair excellently with your RX 7800 XT. However, if you find a good deal on AM5 bundles, it might be worth the investment, especially since they are relatively cheap right now on sites like Newegg.
You really should consider upgrading your RAM to 32GB. As someone with 32GB, I often find that both games and Windows use more than 16GB. Pairing the 5700X3D with your 7800XT should give you a great 1440p experience, especially with those extra cores and threads!
