Hey everyone! My 9800X3D just died after about 11 months of use, and I'm wondering if I should stick with AMD or consider switching to Intel. I'm not sure if the issue was due to the old BIOS on my ASRock motherboard or if it was related to my small form factor cooling. I'm planning to upgrade my motherboard and send my CPU for RMA, but I really want to keep my Terra case, DDR5 RAM, and 9070 XT.
Do you think switching to a 9700X would be a good move? It's a lower wattage CPU, going from 105W to 65W, and I'm curious about potential FPS losses in my games. Honestly, I feel like the 9800X3D was too much for my 9070 XT. What do you all think? Should I just get another 9800X3D, or is it time to jump ship to Intel?

If all other components are fine, I suspect the small form factor cooling might be the culprit. If there was a BIOS issue with the motherboard, you likely wouldn't have been able to boot your system in the first place.
I'd recommend reaching out to ASRock and AMD since you should still be under warranty after just 11 months. They should replace your CPU for free.
If you're getting a replacement 9800X3D, I'd suggest just using that, but maybe with a different motherboard. If you're gaming at 1080P, upgrading to a 9700X might not drastically affect your frame rates. I switched to Intel myself and it works great, but everyone's needs are different.
From what I've seen, ASRock boards have had issues killing the 9800X3D processors, and not just that model—any 9xxx CPUs can be affected too.
That's right! It's really concerning how many posts there are about this on various forums.
You should definitely consider the motherboard; ASRock AM5 boards have a bad reputation, with some jokingly calling them 'murder boards.' Even a 9700X might not be safe! I'd recommend RMAing the CPU and investing in a more reliable board, like MSI or Gigabyte.

Exactly, there's a lot of chatter about ASRock boards killing 9000 series CPUs and despite multiple BIOS updates, the issues persist. You might want to check out that Gamers Nexus video for more details.
