I'm considering upgrading my stock cooler on an AMD-FX6300 since it sounds like a jet engine. I've seen that many online stores say the Pure Rock 2 is compatible with AM3+, but the official site only mentions AM4/5. Did they change something in the design, or is there a reason AM3+ was removed from the compatibility?

I believe it should still work. You can adjust the bracket holes to fit the motherboard. AM4 and AM3+ share some compatibility, but they've removed AM3 from the specs, probably because it's outdated. I’ve been using Pure Rock 2 coolers for years without issues, despite the changes in the packaging.
AM3 and AM4/5 have different hole spacing, so if the official page states it doesn't support AM3, I wouldn't risk it. There are definitely other coolers that will fit using the plastic clips that your board has. For example, the Wraith Prism from AMD works with those clips instead of screw holes.
