Is the Radeon RX 9070 XT enough for 4K ray tracing, or should I get an RTX 5080?

I'm planning to replace my gaming laptop, which has an RTX 4060 and Core i5-12500H, with a powerful desktop for 4K gaming. I mostly play single-player games, along with Gray Zone Warfare, Ready or Not, and Enshrouded. The build would use a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and 32GB of RAM.

I'd like to play at 4K with ray tracing enabled and might try path tracing, although path tracing isn't essential. The RX 9070 XT is attractive because of its lower price, but I'm concerned about games such as Cyberpunk 2077. Would I need to rely heavily on FSR and frame generation, possibly causing image-quality issues or artifacts? The RTX 5080 costs more, but seems much better suited to demanding 4K ray-traced games.

Is the RX 9070 XT capable enough for this use case, or is it worth saving for the RTX 5080?

For normal rasterized performance, the RX 9070 XT is an excellent value. However, 4K ray tracing is where the RTX 5080 pulls ahead, and the gap becomes even larger with path tracing. DLSS is also generally more consistent than relying on upscaling and frame generation on the Radeon card. If you can comfortably afford the 5080 and 4K ray tracing is a priority, it’s the safer choice.

FSR 4.1 has improved the situation, since games supporting FSR 3.1 or newer can often use the newer upscaling mode. Even so, Nvidia still has the stronger overall ray-tracing and upscaling feature set.

The decision mostly comes down to price. The 9070 XT offers much better value if you’re primarily interested in raster performance or are willing to use 1440p ultrawide and moderate ray tracing. The 5080 is the obvious choice if you specifically want 4K ray tracing, Cyberpunk-style path tracing, and higher settings without constantly compromising. A 5070 Ti could also be worth considering if the 5080 is dramatically more expensive in your area, but it gives up some performance at 4K.

That makes sense. I’m mainly trying to avoid buying the cheaper card and then immediately wishing I had spent more once I enable ray tracing.

The 9070 XT is better viewed as a strong 1440p or entry-level 4K card. It can handle plenty of 4K games, but modern AAA titles with heavy ray tracing will often require reduced settings or aggressive upscaling. The 5080 is much more appropriate for a consistent 4K ray-tracing experience, although even that card may need upscaling and frame generation for path tracing. Path tracing is extremely demanding, so don’t expect a guaranteed native 4K 60 FPS experience from either card.
