Is the RTX 5060 a good upgrade for editing 5K/6K footage?

My current graphics card is an RX 580, and I'm considering upgrading as I build a career in video editing. The RTX 5060 is one of the best options within my budget, but I'm unsure whether its performance and 8GB of VRAM will be enough for editing 5K or 6K RAW footage when the final projects are usually delivered in 1080p. Would it be a worthwhile upgrade, or should I look for a card with more VRAM?

If you can find one at a similar price, a 12GB RTX 3060 or 16GB RTX 4060 Ti may be worth considering. The 3060 won’t be as fast as the 5060 in every task, but the extra VRAM can help with high-resolution timelines, effects, and multiple video layers. For a career-focused workstation, capacity can matter more than a modest difference in raw GPU speed.

The RTX 5060 would be a major improvement over an RX 580, especially for GPU-accelerated effects, playback, and hardware encoding. However, the 8GB of VRAM could become a limitation with demanding 5K/6K projects, even if your final export is only 1080p. Using proxies or optimized media can make 8GB workable, but I wouldn’t consider it especially future-proof for professional editing.

The best choice depends heavily on the editing software and codecs you use. Many basic editing operations still rely more on the CPU, while the GPU mainly helps with effects, timeline acceleration, decoding, and encoding. An RTX 5060 is perfectly reasonable for 1080p delivery if you work with proxies, but for native 5K/6K RAW workflows, prioritize a stronger CPU and a GPU with at least 12GB—preferably 16GB—of VRAM.
