I'm leaning toward the RTX 5070 because it costs about 20% less where I live. Nvidia also seems stronger for emulation, DLSS is supported in more games and is generally more polished than FSR, and I've heard Nvidia cards tend to require less troubleshooting. For primarily gaming, is the RX 9070 XT worth paying extra for, or is the cheaper RTX 5070 the better value?

The deciding factor is probably your actual workload. Choose the 5070 if you need CUDA, specific creator or AI software, stronger emulation support, ray tracing, or DLSS and frame generation. Choose the 9070 XT if you mainly play regular rasterized games and want more performance and VRAM. At 20% savings, I’d be comfortable recommending the 5070 unless you already know its VRAM limit or performance will matter to you.
The two cards are close enough in overall experience that you probably won’t be disappointed with either at 1440p. If the price gap were only 5–10%, I’d favor the 9070 XT more strongly. At 20%, the RTX 5070 has a defensible value proposition, particularly for single-player games using Nvidia features or for non-gaming workloads.
You may want to compare the RX 9070 non-XT as well. It is often around 20% cheaper than the XT while being only roughly 10% slower, which could make it a better middle ground than comparing the 5070 directly with the XT.
For pure gaming, especially at 1440p, the 9070 XT is usually the stronger card. Its extra VRAM can also help in newer or more demanding games. The RTX 5070 is still a reasonable purchase at 20% less, though—you’re accepting lower raw performance in exchange for Nvidia’s software and feature ecosystem rather than getting the same performance for less money.
The RX 9070 XT is the faster gaming card and has more VRAM, so it’s the better choice if you want maximum rasterized performance or plan to keep the card for several years. However, at a 20% higher price, the value is fairly close. The RTX 5070 makes sense if you care about DLSS, ray tracing features, emulation, CUDA, or broader game support for Nvidia technologies.
The 5070 does not automatically mean fewer driver problems. Both manufacturers have occasional issues, and most games work fine without any special troubleshooting.
