I'm buying my sibling a GPU as a birthday gift to replace an RTX 2060 6GB. The options I'm considering are a $750 RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and an $850 RTX 5070 12GB. The 5070 performs better but has 4GB less VRAM. They'll be gaming at 1440p on a new monitor, and the system still uses DDR4. Which card makes more sense, and should I consider an AMD alternative?

At 1440p, 12GB should be adequate for most games, especially with sensible settings. The 16GB model becomes more attractive for local AI, Blender, heavy mods, or other workloads that actually use large amounts of VRAM. Also check the system’s regular memory—if it only has 12GB of DDR4, upgrading to 32GB could improve the overall experience more than the VRAM difference.
The bigger issue is pricing. A 5060 Ti 16GB can be reasonable near its normal retail price, but $750 is extremely high. At that level, the 5070 is also hard to justify unless Nvidia features such as CUDA, DLSS, frame generation, ray tracing, or specific productivity software are important.
Look at the Radeon RX 9070 or 9070 XT before buying either Nvidia card. They offer 16GB of VRAM and are typically faster than the RTX 5070, with the XT competing closer to the RTX 5070 Ti in performance. If one is available around $675–$750, it’s likely the stronger gaming purchase.
AMD can still be the wrong choice if the computer will be used for CUDA, certain video-editing or AI workloads, or if Nvidia’s upscaling and ray-tracing features matter. Driver stability concerns are worth checking for the specific games, but they shouldn’t automatically rule out the cards.
Between those two Nvidia cards, I’d choose the RTX 5070. It’s roughly 25–30% faster, and 12GB is generally enough for 1440p gaming today. You can always reduce texture quality slightly if a demanding game exceeds the available VRAM, while extra VRAM can’t make up for a large performance gap.
DLSS and frame generation could be valid reasons to stay with Nvidia, but they should be requirements for this particular user rather than assumptions. For ordinary 1440p gaming, AMD may offer much better value.
