I'm planning a new PC build to replace my current system, which has an RX 6700 XT and Ryzen 5 5600. I'm deciding between the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, with the XT costing about €800—roughly €150 more than the non-XT. How large of an upgrade would either card be over the RX 6700 XT, and is the extra cost for the XT worthwhile? I'm considering pairing the GPU with a tray Ryzen 7 7800X3D for around €280 and would mainly play competitive games, plus newer titles at 1440p Ultra with a target of at least 60 FPS.

For your target of 1440p Ultra at 60 FPS or more, the RX 9070 should be plenty. It also uses less power and produces less heat, while still being a major upgrade over the RX 6700 XT. The XT is worthwhile mainly if you want higher refresh rates in demanding games or more headroom for future titles.
The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a strong choice for this build, especially for competitive games and high-refresh-rate 1440p gaming. Your current Ryzen 5 5600 could bottleneck either new GPU in some CPU-heavy or competitive games, but the 7800X3D should give the cards much more room to perform. Also make sure your power supply is appropriate: the XT draws more power, so a quality 850W unit is a safer pairing, while the RX 9070 generally gives you more flexibility.
At 1440p, the RX 9070 XT is generally only around 10–15% faster than the RX 9070, while costing about 20% more in your case. That makes the regular RX 9070 the better value unless you specifically need the extra performance for demanding games, ultrawide resolutions, or 4K. For example, a game running at roughly 72 FPS on the 9070 might reach around 77–82 FPS on the XT.
I’d consider the XT much more attractive if the price gap were closer to €60. With a €150 difference, I’d use the savings toward another component or keep the non-XT.

I chose the regular RX 9070 for similar reasons and have been happy with it at 1440p. The performance difference is real, but it hasn’t been large enough to matter for my games.
