Is the Ryzen 5 8500G a Good Choice for Gaming on a Budget?

I'm looking to buy a PC that can run games at 720p on low settings with at least 30fps. My budget is $691, but I'm finding things pretty pricey where I live. For example, the RX 6600 costs around $422 here, which makes my decision harder. I've seen mixed reviews on the Ryzen 5 8500G APU, and I'm not a fan of buying used parts. Can you suggest if the 8500G is worth it or recommend other options within my budget? I don't want to waste the money I've worked six months to save up.

For your situation, I’d say the Ryzen 5 8500G is a decent choice. It has a mixed reception because people generally think you can get better performance with a separate CPU and GPU combo. But considering the prices you're facing, this APU might work well for your needs.

You might want to look at the Ryzen 8600G or 8700G instead if you can stretch your budget. Those have a better integrated GPU and can run games like Fortnite at 1080p and 60fps. Plus, building an AM5 system means you can upgrade to a dedicated GPU later, which is a solid path forward. Don't forget to get some high-speed RAM like 32GB at 6000 CL30-36 for better performance!

The 8500G should do fine even at 1080p for less demanding games. Just keep in mind it won’t run AAA titles well. It’s a starter option until you can buy a dedicated GPU, which is a good plan!

I just want to use it until I can switch to a better GPU later.
