I'm considering whether I should upgrade my 3090 Ti to a 5080 for gaming and some FEA simulations using Ansys, Abaqus, and Comsol. Just to give some context, I bought the 3090 Ti for about $830 over 3.5 years ago. Is this upgrade necessary, or will my current setup still hold its own?

You might want to ask yourself if you really need this upgrade. For me, I wouldn't consider upgrading from my 3080 Ti until there's a significant performance increase. Are you experiencing any FPS issues? That's a key factor.
Honestly, not really. The 3090 Ti is pretty comparable to the 4070 Ti, maybe just a 20% performance boost, but you're actually downgrading in terms of VRAM. If you're getting a flagship card, you shouldn't be looking to upgrade again so soon.
Right? Upgrading from 24GB VRAM to something lower seems unnecessary unless you're hitting a wall in performance.
