Is upgrading from a Ryzen 5 5600 to a Ryzen 7 5700X worthwhile for 1080p gaming?

I'm considering replacing my Ryzen 5 5600 with a Ryzen 7 5700X. My system has an RX 9060 XT 16GB, and I mainly play AAA games at 1080p. Would this upgrade provide a major improvement in average FPS or smoothness, or would I be better off saving for a different CPU or a full platform upgrade?

Probably not a major improvement. Both CPUs use the same Zen 3 architecture, so the extra two cores and slightly higher clocks usually produce very similar average gaming performance. You might see somewhat better 1% lows or frametimes in CPU-heavy games, but the difference generally won’t justify the cost.

Before buying a CPU, make sure you’re not simply GPU-limited at 1080p. If you only have 16GB of system memory, moving to 32GB may help with newer AAA games and background applications more than the 5600-to-5700X swap. In most cases, the best order is more RAM if needed, then an X3D chip or a complete move to a newer platform.

For a clearly noticeable AM4 gaming upgrade, look at an X3D processor such as the 5700X3D or 5800X3D, assuming the price is reasonable and your motherboard supports it. The much larger L3 cache can improve average FPS and especially 1% lows in CPU-limited games. Otherwise, tuning the 5600 with PBO or a mild overclock may give you a small boost for free.

The 5700X makes more sense for streaming, video editing, coding, or running heavy background workloads while gaming. For games alone, your Ryzen 5 5600 is still a capable AM4 chip. If it’s running well, keep it and save toward a larger platform upgrade instead of buying a small intermediate upgrade.
