Is Upgrading from a Ryzen 5 5800X3D Worth It?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5800X3D and I'm considering an upgrade to an AM5 CPU. I've heard a lot of people say that the only significant upgrade would be to the 7800X3D, but I'm not sure if it's really worth the investment. My current setup includes a 6800XT GPU, and I'm mainly looking for improvements in gaming performance. Would I really notice a difference with just a CPU upgrade, or should I focus on upgrading other components first?

I haven't found 1 game myself that the 5800x3d/6800xt/32gb/Samsung Evo I use, won't play at 1440 smooth and silky on ultra. I am on a Sony OLED 120hz vrr 65" tv. Strong cooling. I set base clock in bios all cores to 4000. Tweaked ram to t1. Killed the spread. Small tweaks in bios for performance. Adrenaline tuning on the GPU. I max CPU temp at 87 running cpu burner and 1440p Furmark. Clocks sit at 4100 and boost to 4575. L3 cache sits at a comfy 42-47. Ram fans. 360 AIO. Tri-fan 6800xt.
Normal usage and hard gaming the temps are 70 or so CPU. I just wanted to toss in here that I would wait till next gen AMD socket. The 5800x3d is still a SOLID processor. Especially matched with a top end GPU. A GPU purchase would transfer right over to the next gen upgrade.
Just my thoughts.

Honestly, upgrading to any new AM5 chip like the 9800X3D means you’ll likely need a new motherboard and RAM as well. It's a big investment for just a slight performance increase. Unless you absolutely need the upgrade for specific tasks, I'd suggest waiting it out for a new generation or just upgrading the GPU.

I agree. I'm curious though, have you seen any comparisons for CPU upgrades in terms of emulation performance?

That’s exactly what I’m thinking! I’d have to spend so much just to keep a similar GPU.

I'd recommend focusing on your GPU first. Upgrading to a 9800X3D or similar CPU will only yield marginal improvements if your GPU remains the same. The 5800X3D is still a solid CPU, especially for gaming at 1440p or even 4K. You might not see a worthwhile FPS boost without also upgrading that graphics card.

Good point! I was thinking about just upgrading the CPU, but maybe I should look into a new GPU first.

For sure! Upgrading the GPU usually gives you better performance for a lower overall cost.

If you’re gaming at 1080p, the difference with a 7800X3D might be more noticeable during intense CPU-heavy games. But for most people playing at higher resolutions like 1440p or 4K, it’s generally better to prioritize a GPU upgrade. The 5800X3D is still competent for now.

Great to know! I usually play at a higher resolution, so it seems like a CPU upgrade might not help me much.

Exactly! Stick with the 5800 for now unless you find it below your expectations.

I made the switch from a 5800X3D to a 7800X3D, but honestly, I didn't see a major upgrade while gaming at 144Hz with both old and new GPUs. The transition from my 3950X to the 5800X3D was a massive improvement, but this time it felt more like a side step. If you're not feeling a performance hit with your current games, you might want to consider just upgrading your GPU instead.

I hear you on that! I'm in a similar situation and thinking about whether to upgrade my GPU or go for the 5950 instead.

Thanks for sharing! I'm also on the fence about upgrading; I'm currently on a 3950 and was wondering if the improvements would justify the costs.
