Is Upgrading from a Ryzen 5600X to a 5700X3D a Smart Move?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5600X paired with a 6900XT in a high-performance AM4 setup, and I mainly play strategy games like Victoria 3 and CK3. I've noticed that performance tends to lag significantly as the game progresses. While I also enjoy playing CSGO and Helldivers from time to time, my main focus is on strategy games. Considering this, would it be worth it for me to upgrade to a 5700X3D?

If you find a good price on that 5700X3D, it could be worth it! I've been keeping an eye on prices since January, and they’ve been 3x or 4x what they should be. It's been a bit of a hunt to find a decent deal.

It really depends on the price. Consider if moving to 8 cores will benefit you; maybe the 5700X could be a more cost-effective option.

It won’t drastically change your experience to ‘everything is perfect,’ but upgrading could yield a decent improvement for some games. Since they’re in high demand, AM4 is still valuable right now, so it's tough to say what’s ‘worth it’ without considering the current market.

Whether or not the upgrade is worth it really comes down to how much you can find the 5700X3D for. It's been out of production since last year, so prices are pretty steep. In general, unless you snag a fantastic deal, it might not be the best investment right now.

That's exactly my dilemma. My AM4 motherboard is quite old and showing its age. Upgrading to the X3D chip costs around $600, but there's a MicroCenter bundle for AM5 at $699. Seems like it might be a smarter choice to just switch to AM5.

Are there any alternatives that offer a solid price-to-performance ratio and good single-core performance?

The 5600X is still a solid gaming CPU. For the games you mentioned, you might see some gains, but probably not significant enough to justify the cost of the upgrade, especially since those prices are pushing into the range of newer AM5 setups. If there's a MicroCenter nearby, it's probably better to wait for an AM5 bundle unless you can find the 5700X3D used at a great price.
