Is upgrading from an i9-11900K and RTX 3080 to a newer gaming setup worth it?

I currently have an ASRock Z590C/ac motherboard, an Intel i9-11900K, 64GB of DDR4-2667 memory in four 16GB sticks, a PNY RTX 3080 10GB, a Corsair RM850e power supply, one 5.5TB hard drive, and three 1TB SSDs. I mainly play VR games, along with plenty of regular PC games, and the system occasionally struggles. I'm considering replacing the CPU with an i9-12900K, which would require a new motherboard. I've been looking at DDR4-compatible boards such as the MSI MPG Z790 EDGE or ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-A because I'd prefer to keep my current memory. I'm also interested in upgrading the graphics card to an RTX 5080, possibly the white Gigabyte AERO OC model, but I'm unsure whether my 850W power supply would be suitable. My total budget for the upgrades, including the graphics card, is around $2,600. Would a 12900K and 5080 be a sensible combination, or would another CPU, motherboard, or memory configuration make more sense for gaming and VR?

For gaming, the i9-12900K probably isn’t the best value at this point. A Core i5-14600K can be faster in games, costs less, and generally uses less power. You could pair it with a reasonably priced B760 motherboard that supports DDR4 instead of paying extra for a Z-series board. A Z690 or Z790 board is mainly worthwhile if you specifically need CPU overclocking or additional features. Your existing 64GB kit should work, but DDR4-2667 is relatively slow and may limit performance somewhat.

The 14600K is also more efficient and usually cheaper than the 12900K, so it leaves more of the budget available for the graphics card.

The RTX 5080 upgrade would likely provide a much larger gaming and VR performance improvement than moving from the 11900K to a 12900K. Your RM850e may be adequate depending on the exact 5080 model and its power recommendation, but check the manufacturer’s requirement and use the proper native 12V-2x6 cable or an appropriate adapter. If the card recommends more than 850W, replacing the PSU would be sensible rather than running it close to its limit.

If you’re willing to replace the memory and move to DDR5, an AMD gaming-focused platform such as a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with an AM5 motherboard is another strong option. However, that route requires new DDR5 memory, so keeping your current RAM makes a DDR4-compatible Intel setup more budget-friendly. Before upgrading, it would also be worth checking whether the stuttering is caused by CPU usage, GPU usage, temperatures, or the slow hard drive, since the right upgrade depends on what is actually reaching its limit.
