Is Upgrading from an RTX 3060 to a Used RTX 3080 a Smart Move in 2025?

I'm considering an upgrade from my RTX 3060 to a used RTX 3080 for gaming at 1440p. My goal is to hit 80-100 fps on high settings, and frankly, I'm not interested in ray tracing or other advanced features like Frame Generation or special encoders. What matters most to me is DLSS, as I've heard mixed things about FSR performance. I managed to find a used RTX 3080 for $370, which I can return. Meanwhile, new cards in the same range like the RTX 5060 TI and RX 9060 XT are significantly more expensive (around $610 and $523 respectively). Based on my situation and budget, is the 3080 a worthy upgrade or should I consider holding onto the 3060 a bit longer?

The RTX 3080 is definitely the best option here, especially at that price. It's going to give you a noticeable performance boost compared to the 3060. Stick with the 3080, and don't sweat the other options. You'll enjoy the upgrade!

Given what you paid, I think you're going to be happy sticking with the 3080.

This isn't always true, but with those crazy prices, the 3080 is more appealing. You've made a solid choice!

Consider the RTX 2080 as an alternative—it’s a decent upgrade from 3060. It might even cost less than the 3080 and saves on power consumption if that matters to you.

Unless you're looking at the TI version, the 3080 gives a much better performance boost. The older models just don't cut it anymore.

Ultimately, you're familiar with your local market better than anyone else. If you can sell your 3060 for a fair price, that could help your decision. Just keep in mind, if you plan to use the 3080 for several years, new games might push you towards ray tracing eventually. Waiting for a better deal on a newer card could be a wise move.

I can expect around $210 for the 3060, but I plan to sell my whole setup. If ray tracing becomes a standard in the next few years, sticking with the 3080 for now seems reasonable.

If the ray tracing trend continues, I’m not sure a budget card will be sufficient in the future. I think your plan to stick with the 3080 makes sense.

Gotta say, the way you laid that out was a bit hard to read! But I totally get your perspective, no worries!

Absolutely worth it! Getting a 3080 for $370 is a steal, and you’ll see a substantial performance increase over the 3060. You made a good call!

I’d advise against the upgrade. If you're looking for value, saving for the RX 9060 XT or even waiting for newer generations would be better than buying the older RTX 3080.

PerformanceMind -

The 3080 still outperforms the 9060 XT significantly, especially at that price point. If the 9060 were cheaper, it might be an option, but for now, the 3080 is the right choice.

While the RTX 3080 might not have some newer features, its performance is still relevant. Driver support for older cards generally lasts long enough too.
