I'm considering switching out my i3 8100 for an i7 7700. I'm curious to know if this upgrade is worth it in terms of performance improvements, especially since I've heard mixed things about compatibility.

Just a heads-up: the 7th gen Intel CPUs like the i7 7700 aren't officially supported for Windows 11. So if you're planning to upgrade your OS in the future, an 8th gen i7 would be a safer bet.

Upgrading to an i7 7700 can give you better performance overall, especially for multitasking and gaming. However, keep in mind that while both CPUs use the LGA 1151 socket, not all motherboards are compatible with both generations. Your current motherboard might not support the 7700, which is something to check before going ahead.

If you can swing it, consider getting an i7 8700 instead. It's a much better option since it has 6 cores and 12 threads, which gives you a significant performance boost and keeps you in the current generation.
