Is upgrading to a Ryzen 7 7800x3D with a 2080 Ti a smart move?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of upgrading my PC bit by bit and I'm looking to make a significant change by replacing my Ryzen 5 2600 with a Ryzen 7 7800x3D. I currently have a 2080 Ti (specifically an ASUS dual-fan model) which I've overclocked a bit to keep up with my old CPU. I'm curious if this upgrade is a good idea overall and if there are any other components I should consider changing as well.

Just a heads up, you're likely going to need a new motherboard and RAM too because of the CPU switch. The Ryzen 7 7800x3D uses the AM5 socket, so your current motherboard probably won't support it. If you're just looking to upgrade the CPU, the 5800x3D or even the 5700x3D could be good options — they fit the AM4 socket if you don't want to change too much right now.

That's true! There are some good bundle deals out there that could include a motherboard, RAM, and the 7800x3D if budget permits. Also, ensure your PSU can handle everything!

Yeah, AM4 really limits your future options. But the 5800x3D is definitely solid!

Keep in mind that if you're changing to a 7800x3D, you'll probably want to consider whether your cooling setup is up to the task, especially with those increased workloads.

I had a 2060 Super with a 7800x3D before I upgraded to the 4080, and I can say you’ll notice two main things: first, your graphics card will perform better than before, but also, it might run hotter since it will be pushed more. I ended up undervolting a bit when I switched CPUs, and it helped keep temps down.
