I'm planning to upgrade from my Intel i7 7700K to an AMD Ryzen 9 9900X. This is my first time switching to AMD because I was a bit worried about the issues with the 14th series Intel chips. Currently, I have an RX 6800 graphics card. My usage is predominantly gaming (about 60%), and the rest is split between music production, AI, and remote work, which often means having multiple tabs open for research. I chose the 9900X for its strong performance, especially for non-gaming tasks. I've already bought the motherboard and CPU, but I'm curious if I should consider the Ryzen 9 7800X3D instead, given its gaming prowess. The 7800X3D is around $480, about $100 more than the 9900X. Any thoughts on whether this upgrade is the right choice?

The 7800X3D would shine in gaming but won't perform as well in non-gaming applications. Your RX 6800 might not fully utilize the extra gaming power from the 7800X3D, so it depends on what you value more.
The 7800X3D won't significantly improve non-gaming tasks for you. It would help to know what games you play and your monitor setup to see if it's worth the upgrade since the RX 6800 can only do so much with the extra performance.
Can you provide a source for that? I thought the 7800X3D would be better than the previous chip and outperform other non-X3D CPUs in non-gaming tasks.
While Intel's 14th series issues have been addressed recently, the 9900X is still a powerhouse. It generally outperforms its competitors across the board. In your case, especially for production tasks, I'd say it's a solid choice over the Intel 14700K, though it's worth noting that both are top-tier chips.
I do worry about long-term stability. I’ve heard the chips can have oxidation issues, and even though there are updates, I really want something reliable. I returned the Intel 14700K because I didn't want that headache.
I have three 27" Samsung curved monitors at 75Hz and 2K resolution. I often play games like Escape from Tarkov, Metro Exodus, GTA 5, War Thunder, Cyberpunk 2077, and I'm hoping to run GTA 6 when it comes out. My 7700K is definitely holding me back in these games.
