Is Upgrading to an i3-12100F with DDR5 a Good Idea for My Budget?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from an Intel i7-3770 because it's been running really hot. Instead of investing in a new cooler for such an old chip, I figured it might be better to upgrade my entire platform instead.

Here's what I currently have:
- Intel i7-3770
- RX 550 2GB
- Kingston 2x8GB DDR3
- Seasonic 380W PSU

I'm planning to spend about IDR 3.1 million (around $190) on this upgrade, which includes:
- Intel i3-12100F
- Team T-Force Delta 2x8GB DDR5-6000
- Gigabyte H610M K DDR5

This motherboard claims it can support 14th gen CPUs (as long as they're not i7 or K series), and even though I picked DDR5 for future-proofing, I'm open to DDR4 if it offers better value.

Realistically, I don't think I'll be upgrading the CPU for a while, likely not for the next 3 years or more. I plan to focus on upgrading the GPU instead.

Some have advised against H-series motherboards due to weaker VRMs and suggested looking at B660/B760 options instead. Others mentioned switching to AM4, but that could go over budget and has limited future upgrades.

So, considering my budget, do you think this upgrade path is worth it for value and longevity? Any suggestions for better CPU/RAM/mobo combos at this price? Thanks in advance!

This upgrade might not be the best move. Sure, you'll get DDR5, but the LGA1700 platform is kinda outdated already. Look into how much a good DDR4 motherboard costs and maybe switch to an i5 or even a Ryzen chip; you could end up saving money and getting much better performance for your investment. A Ryzen 5500 setup might surprise you with how well it performs for less!

Thanks for the insight! I didn’t realize the LGA1700 platform could be somewhat limiting. I’ve started looking into some budget Ryzen setups and compared my options. I have some numbers from local shops, and it seems like the Ryzen 5500 could be a solid contender for my needs. Appreciate the feedback!

Honestly, if you're going for an economy build, I'd recommend sticking with DDR4 instead of jumping into DDR5 right now. Yes, DDR5 is cool, but for your budget and future-proofing, DDR4 with a solid B760 motherboard would give you much better performance for the price. You’ll get more cores for a similar cost if you consider options like a more powerful i5 or even a Ryzen 5 setup. You need to look into how much you can save by going DDR4; it might be worth it!

It’s tough to give you alternatives without knowing local prices, but honestly, anything you upgrade will be a massive improvement over your current setup. You might want to consider getting a better mid-range CPU like the i5-12400 or even the Ryzen 5 5600 if it’s within reach price-wise; they'll treat you well in the long run. Just make sure you check your local pricing for deals. And don’t completely rule out DDR4!
