Is Upgrading to the RX 9070 XT Worth It for 1080p Gaming and Movies?

Hey fellow gamers! I'm planning to upgrade my 2020 build, which currently has a GTX 1070 Ti 8GB, and I'm considering either an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or an RX 9070 XT. I primarily play heavily modded Minecraft (where I host servers) and World of Warcraft, along with some retro games and New Vegas with a ton of mods. I usually stick to 1080p resolution. I'm curious if switching to the RX 9070 XT is a good choice for 1080p gaming and for watching large video files (80-120GB blu-rays). My current setup handles films pretty well with few hiccups. I know Minecraft and WoW might see some performance boosts, but I feel like most improvements would come from updating the CPU, which will be a Ryzen 7 7700. Do you think the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB would be sufficient for my needs long-term?

Great question! The 9070 XT will give you more headroom for gaming and rendering, but it might be too much for just 1080p. Still, owning it could let you comfortably upgrade to a better display later on if you wanted!

The RTX 5060 Ti is in the same performance tier as the RX 9060 XT, while the RX 9070 XT offers a significant upgrade. However, for 1080p, you might not need that extra power. The 9070 is more geared towards 1440p or higher gaming. That said, if you want some future-proofing or the option to upgrade your monitor later, it could be worth it!

But what if I never want to upgrade my display? Wouldn't the 5060 Ti be enough?

I recommend looking into your whole system setup. You might get better results by investing in a more powerful CPU and motherboard rather than going all out on the GPU for 1080p. Just a thought!

Honestly, the RX 9070 XT feels like overkill for 1080p. Your current setup seems to run fine with your mods, and the 5060 Ti should do well enough. If you’re not venturing into AAA titles, you might not need to spend extra on the 9070.

If you're already considering the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, look into the RX 9060 XT 16GB too. It's usually cheaper and offers similar performance without the need for advanced ray tracing capabilities. For 1080p, the 9070 would be more power than you need right now!
