Is Velero a Reliable Choice for Kubernetes Backups with Broadcom Involvement?

Hey everyone! I'm looking into integrating Velero into my Kubernetes backup strategy, but I'm a bit concerned since it's a product from VMware Tanzu, under Broadcom now. How long do you think Velero will be maintained? Are there better alternatives out there, or should I just stick with Velero and hope for the best?

I’m planning to stick with Velero until it becomes untenable, but I do have my eyes peeled for alternatives, just in case. The way Broadcom does things makes me nervous.

I totally get you! I'm hesitant to dive into more Broadcom products too after my experiences with them.

Azure Backup for Kubernetes is built on Velero, so even if Broadcom were to heavily commercialize it, Azure would probably fork it and keep it going. Plus, there are other systems like OpenShift's OADP that use Velero, so I wouldn't worry too much about support disappearing.

That's reassuring to know, thanks for sharing!

Good point! It sounds like Velero has some safety nets in place.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too optimistic about Broadcom's commitment to open source. They might keep it running but perhaps push an enterprise version later on. Still, Velero is well-loved, and if it goes south, community forks might pop up, so that's a silver lining!

That’s a good point! I guess for now, I'll keep using it and see what happens.

Yeah, I agree. The community around Velero is strong, so there's hope for a fork if things go bad!

I tried Velero but switched to VolSync for my GitOps home lab, and it works seamlessly. You might want to check it out as well!

I've been looking for something different! Thanks for the tip!

I think if Broadcom tries to make Velero enterprise-only, a fork will definitely emerge. Velero has numerous contributors outside of VMware/Broadcom, and it’s widely used in the industry, which gives it a good chance of survival.
