I'm looking to make the jump to Linux after using Windows 11 for a while, and I'm considering ZorinOS since I've heard it's beginner-friendly. I don't really know much about Linux, so I'm curious if there's anything specific I should learn beforehand, like certain coding languages or commands. Also, are there any other distributions you think are better suited for someone just starting out? I mainly use my laptop for everyday tasks, studying anatomy in med school, and some gaming.

Honestly, you should be careful about switching your main computer's OS while you’re in med school. If things go wrong, it can really impact your studies. You might want to dual boot to keep Windows as a backup while you get used to Zorin. That way, you can switch back if you need vital software or access to Microsoft Office during crunch time.

Zorin is excellent as a first distro! I've used it extensively after trying several other distros, and it definitely checks all the boxes for ease of use and consistency. Make sure your important stuff is backed up—using Timeshift for system backups is a great idea. After install, update everything, pick the right graphics drivers, and you should be good to go!

With your use case, consider adding a second hard drive just for Linux. Even something small like 128GB can be perfect for getting started without risking your data. This way, you can easily switch back to Windows if needed. And concerning gaming, Zorin should handle that decently, but just make sure your games are compatible with Linux.

You really don’t need to know programming to get started with Linux. A few basic terminal commands can help, but they’re not required. Just learn things like 'cd', 'ls', and 'cp' if you want to. Zorin is a solid choice—as long as you pick a popular distribution with a good support community, you’ll be fine. Try not to choose something obscure!

Just a heads up—if you're switching from Windows, Zorin can ease that process since it allows you to customize the look and feel to something you're familiar with. It has a user-friendly app store, and after trying it out, you might also find alternatives for your med school software and gaming needs. Don't doubt yourself; you’ll get the hang of Linux in no time!
